Key moments

The Brilliant and Great moves, and the costliest mistakes, as the review explains them.

22…Be6: Great

22…Be6! The only good move here: every alternative is clearly worse.

  • Moves the attacked bishop to safety.
  • Moving away uncovers the rook on c8, which now hits the bishop on c1.
  • The next best move, 22…Bc3, would drop Black's winning chances from 48% to 14% (+4.89).
  • 22…Be6 gets the bishop out of the way of bxc4.
  • White was threatening bxc4, winning a bishop for a pawn. The bishop steps away.
  • White answers 23.Qd3, aiming at the h7 pawn, a weak point next to the king.

The opening

Ruy Lopez: Closed, Keres Defense (C96)

  • Both sides followed opening theory up to 14…Nxd4: 28 moves in all, 14 by White and 14 by Black.
  • Theory runs out after 14…Nxd4: too few games between strong players reached this position to go further.
