Key moments

The Brilliant and Great moves, and the costliest mistakes, as the review explains them.

18…Bxd5: Mistake

18…Bxd5 is a mistake: Black's winning chances go from 52% to 39%.

  • White answers 19.exd5, which takes the bishop on d5.
  • After exd5, White wins 3 points of material within 4 moves.
  • Better was 18…e6 (−0.20): moving away uncovers the queen on d8, which now hits the queen on h4.

Better: 18…e6 threatens …Qxh4, winning the queen, and stops Nxe7+. After 19.Qxd8 Rcxd8 20.Nxc5 dxc5 21.Nf4 g5, the queens come off and the knights are traded (−0.20).

The opening

Sicilian Defense: Modern Variations (B50)

  • Both sides followed opening theory up to 5.O-O: 9 moves in all, 5 by White and 4 by Black.
  • Theory runs out after 5.O-O: too few games between strong players reached this position to go further.
