Key moments
The Brilliant and Great moves, and the costliest mistakes, as the review explains them.
24…Bxe4: Great
24…Bxe4! The only good move here: every alternative is clearly worse.
- Takes the pawn on e4.
- Moving away uncovers the queen on c8, which now hits the c4 pawn.
- The next best move, 24…Qd7, would drop Black's winning chances from 49% to 37% (+1.49).
- 24…Bxe4 stops Rxd6 and uncovers an attack on the c4 pawn.
- White was threatening Rxd6, winning a pawn. Bxe4 takes care of it.
- Trades bishop for pawn.
The opening
Sicilian Defense: French Variation (B40)
- Both sides followed opening theory up to 10.Nxc6: 19 moves in all, 10 by White and 9 by Black.
- Theory runs out after 10.Nxc6: too few games between strong players reached this position to go further.
